Facebook Ad Sizes And Specs In 2020

If you are starting to take Facebook marketing seriously, here’s a useful guide for you. And when I say useful, I mean you should bookmark it. Because trust me, after years of working on Facebook for numerous clients, handling their advertisement and marketing campaigns, I still struggle with the various Facebook ad sizes and specs.

I hope that with this single blog post, I am able to present some of the most (because all would be too ambitious) important and popular ad specifications that you (as well as I) can reference to.

1. Facebook Cover Photo Size

OK not quite Facebook ad, but this is so very important if you want people to take your business seriously. The first thing they will see on your business page is your Cover Photo. So make sure it your business is well presented by this image.

Facebook cover photo size: 820 x 312 pixels

However, you need to be careful as the mobile version is smaller than the full desktop version. Here’s an example:

The blue box is how the mobile version will look. So when you are creating a cover photo for your Facebook page, make sure to keep the important parts of your image including all text within the center so they don’t get cropped out.

When you have uploaded onto your page, don’t forget to quickly check both versions!

2. Facebook Ad Image Size

Although carousel ads are becoming more and more popular, single image ads are still very relevant and will probably never go out of style for their simplicity and clean look.

As for the copy (i.e. the text used in the advertisement), you’ll need to fill up the following:

  • Text – This is the body copy of your ad. Use this space to highlight a pain point, cite an important research, a famous quote, list benefits, or any other creative ways to get the attention of the reader and spark their interest.
  • Display link – The url you want to display in your ad.
  • Headline – Should be concise and attention grabbing. Best to keep it within 5 words. For instance, you can ask a question, give a command, or make an offer.
  • Link Description – A little more space for you to add text to emphasize why people should take the action you want them to take. However, beware of the very limited space.

This is pretty much the same for most types of Facebook ads. Each has its own character limit and because Facebook keeps changing the limits to these spaces, it is really hard to keep track of what they are.

So one word of advice, always use the ad preview to check what each ad placement will look like before hitting that confirm button to make sure not text is cut off in the mid-sentence.

Note: You can have text overlay on your image – but not too much. There is a 20% rule where text should not cover more than 20% of the total image. If there is too much text, your ad will not run or will only reach fewer number of audience.

3. Facebook Carousel Ads Size

Carousel has become one of the more popular ad these days especially among sellers who have a range of products to showcase in their ads. This ad type allows you to display up to 10 images or videos in a “carousel” where viewers can move through the images by clicking on the set of arrows.

Facebook carousel ad image size: 1080 x 1080 pixels

Minimum number of images: 2
Maximum number of images: 10

Video maximum file size: 4GB
Video length: up to 240 minutes
Image maximum file size: 30MB
Recommended length: Up to 15 sec

When creating a carousel ad, you’ll need to prepare images or videos (as mentioned, up to 10) of 1080 x 1080 pixels – in other word, they are square. You can still have text overlay but do test them out for the 20% rule (see text overlay above in point 2 above).

As for copy, you only have to create the ad text once. The headline and description however, can be unique for each image.

Overlay for Carousel: For carousel ad, there is an option for text overlay built into the ad creation tool. Some of the overlays you can choose are:

  • Free shipping
  • Cash on delivery
  • Home delivery
  • Bank transfer available

4. Facebook Slideshow ad specification

Slideshow ad allows you to create a looping video ad made out of 1 to 10 images (depending on type of template). There are several templates that you can choose for and they come either in square image or vertical image slide shows. Below are the specs:

Facebook slideshow ad sizes: Facebook slideshow ad sizes

Square image: 1080 x 1080 pixels
Vertical image: Width 1080 pixel
Number of images: 1 to 10, depending on template chosen

5. Facebook Video Ad Specs

There is really no difference between Facebook video ads and image ads. Except you use videos instead of still images. You can upload your video with the below specifications, or upload still images and turn them into slideshow video by using the same template as the Slideshow ad above.

Facebook single video ad specs

format: .mov, .mp4 or .gif
Resolution: minimum width 600 pixels
File size: max 4GB
Video length:

  • Facebook: Max 260 mins
  • Instagram feed and story: Max 60 secs
  • Audience network: 5 – 120 secs

Facebook ad option is always changing and evolving, so if you are researching articles on the web to learn about the specs and steps to creating them, make sure that you are getting updated or latest versions of references. Nonetheless, it can get frustrating at times not only due to the differing information, but also due to the complexity of the Facebook ad option itself.

The best advice that we can offer you if you are new to Facebook ad, is just to spend time and play around with the different types of objectives as well as ad formats. It really is just a matter of getting used to using all the Facebook ad sizes and specs.
